                                     "Totem"                             22" x 18"                         watercolor & colored pencil

The painting is done on illustration board with watercolor and drawn into with Prismacolor color pencils.  Parts of an image repeat itself and columns of crotons define the composition.  As the columns emerged, almost on their own, I was reminded of the use of totem poles in some cultures. The practice of creating totems or totem poles is based on an assumed relationship between an individual or group and a natural object known as the totem.  The totem may be a particular bird, animal or plant with which a group believes itself linked in some way and was considered as a dwelling place of spirits.  The title appeared fitting in that respect as the croton plant often dominated many of my compositions and I seemed to be linking to this natural form and symbolically referencing to it in regard to my own inner respect for the power and beauty and awe of nature.
