"Landscape" 54" x 88" 6 panel, oil on canvas
This painting is a collage of 6 separately stretched canvas panels fastened together either side by side or one atop the other. I had wanted to do a "landscape" of a sort, but having my studio now in the city, in contrast to the Islands where colorful plants and trees and flowers abound in natural settings, I could not find the foliage I desired to create the image. So I stared at the parking lot surrounding my studio and accepted that this indeed was my landscape.... somewhat scrubby bushes, concrete, parking spaces and man hole covers. The idea of collaging the canvases happened when I noticed several canvases stacked in a staggered manner against one another in the studio. The interplay of images and colors was interesting and fun. Seeing separate views from different vantage points seemed fitting to my then disjointed perspective of "landscape". I worked with the colors and textures and pattern of it all and came up with what has become one of my favorite pieces. This format lead to several other paintings where different views of a scene come together to define a visual moment.
