"Croton Diptych" 2 panel each 22" x 32" oil on canvas
While living in the Bahamas I became infatuated with the colorful pattern and abstract quality of the croton plant. This plant abounds in its many species on the island and I painted them in numerous compositions. As I became more and more intrigued with the leaf designs, I explored this abstract quality by manipulating the image while at the same time trying to maintain the detail of the actual plant form. Another kind of reality presented itself. In this instance I placed a mirror to a particularly lush looking photo I had taken to produce a flip image and saw the potential for the resulting diptych. The painting is done on stretched cotton canvas in two panels. It was first sketched in with a wash of alizarin crimson oil paint then painted in glazes for a rich depth of color and light.
